Hi! I’m really excited to tell you all about my new online sewing workshop, Enchanted Elegance with Raggedy Remnants. I show you how to make clothes with a unique magical style by using up your fabric scraps and items of clothing you no-longer want. This is the perfect way to avoid landfill and make something new that you’re going to love wearing.

So if you’re new here and this is the first time we’ve met; hello! Welcome to my creative fairytale world! I’ve been making clothing for a very long time; I even made my school uniform! Threads of a Fairytale, my handmade clothing business has now been going for over ten years; which I can hardly believe to be honest! I’ve always hated the waste of throwing away an item of clothing because it doesn’t fit any more, or it’s stained or damaged, because there is usually still something lovely there that can be reclaimed and made beautiful again.

This workshop will show you how to upcycle those unworn clothes and make use of scraps of material you may have gathered. It is all by video, and we will be making three beautiful fairytale dresses; a shawl; a bohemian maxi skirt, and a jacket inspired by Downton Abbey! These will all have a raggedy Threads of a Fairytale look – imagine a princess running through the tangled forest to meet her true love before midnight – that sort of thing! Actually, I think these are all wearable items of clothing, but you could embellish them further to create amazing costumes too, if that’s what you would like to make.
I’ll be talking you through the making process in detail; my thoughts and decisions along the way, and letting you in on my secrets, tips and tricks so that you can create your own one-of-a-kind beautiful clothing.

You will need to have basic sewing knowledge and know how to use your sewing machine. Although I mention stitches, presser feet, needle size etc; I don’t walk you through how to actually sew. However, I must stress, you really don’t need to be an expert; as long as you can do very basic sewing with your machine; you’ll be absolutely fine.

You will need to have a sewing machine that can do zig zag stitch as well as straight stitch. It is a good idea if you use a machine rather than hand stitching, because this isn’t like sewing with a simple pattern where you just have a few seams and the odd dart, we are going to be patchworking your scraps together, which does involve a LOT of stitches!
For a couple of the projects, I do use a darning or free-motion embroidery foot, and I lower the feed dogs in order to use this. It’s a bit of a tricky one, but if you’d like to have a go, then you’ll need to make sure that your sewing machine has this function – I used to have one that you couldn’t lower the feed dogs, and if yours is like that, don’t worry, you can still make the same project, it will just have straighter lines than mine, which is fine!

You’ll also obviously need your usual sewing items like thread, fabric scissors, and lots and lots of pins! Stock up on those pins! Long thin ones are best.

The other main item I would recommend having, is a mannequin / dressmaker’s dummy / body form in your size. Now it might be possible to use yourself and drape the fabric over yourself with the aid of a mirror, but honestly, that would be quite difficult. If you don’t have one, and would rather not buy new, look out on ebay, facebook marketplace or ask your local college if they’re getting rid of any old ones at the end of term. There are also some good tutorials on youtube on how to make your own with newspaper, plastic bags and parcel tape, and that might be a good idea anyway if you have non-standard proportions.

Of course, you will also need PLENTY of scrap fabric! You’ll probably need more than you think you do, so start collecting!

Now, obviously, your scraps will be different from mine, so this is not a course where I can take you through the exact steps to produce an identical piece of clothing. However I can carefully explain my formation and techniques so you can follow along and use what you have. I teach you my method, which I call ‘Adventures in Wild Sewing’, guiding you through choices along the way; how to balance colours and fabric, and I even show mistakes and how to work around them. You’ll gain the confidence and knowledge to go on to create your own whimsical wardrobe.

• You have no sewing experience at all. (You definitely don’t need to be an expert, but you do need to know how to use your sewing machine and can sew to a basic level.)
• You value a professional clean studio. I made these videos in my small home studio without professional lighting and with mess in the background. However everything is clearly filmed and and well edited.
