Making Fairy Festival outfits for Glastonbury

I had such grand plans for the outfits I was going to make for this year’s Glastonbury Festival! However, as in usual Helen style, I left it to the last minute and didn’t quite have the time to make five amazing fairytale dresses for each day of the festival! However I did have time to make myself a navy blue fairy outfit. I upcycled a linen pair of trousers to create the skirt, and used the material left over, plus some scraps (mainly in silk satin) to make a matching top. I love the outfit, and it’s really comfortable too.

I also made myself a purple silk fairy skirt; again by upcycling a pair of Indian Salwar trousers. There is plenty of fabric for twirling, and of course there are my usual Threads of a Fairytale style tattered frills!

By the way, I had an amazing time at Glastonbury Festival. The weather was pretty much perfect and everyone was in a really happy mood so it was a lovely atmosphere. I also always feel inspired to create more clothes after the festival – I love people-watching and seeing what outfits everyone is wearing!

If you’d like to watch some of the process of making the festival clothing, here’s my YouTube video. (There’s also a Glastonbury Festival vlog for every day of the festival on my channel!)

Merry Midsummer Solstice!

At this time of year you’re much more likely to spot a fairy, so here are three tips to help you see one:

1. Take a stroll in nature – especially by trees or wild flowers if you can.

2. Pay attention to what you don’t normally notice.

3. Dress yourself like a fairy so they’ll think you’re one of them and openly show themselves!

Ps. If you need any help with number 3, just take a look for fairy clothing in the Threads of a Fairytale shop!

The new site is live!!

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already noticed anyway, but never mind, I can’t not announce the new Threads of a Fairytale website on the news section can I?! So here it is! My husband, Chris and I have spent many months working on the updated redesign of the website, and I’m so proud of it. The most important change is that I now have a shop section here, rather than needing to send you over to Etsy to make your fairytale clothing purchases. This is so exciting!

And just to let you know, I’ve been through the new shop, making loads of reductions to celebrate! So now is the perfect time to get browsing and grab yourself a fairy bargain. Have fun!

New silk fairy clothing being added for sale!

Last Friday, my eldest daughter, Rain, and I went round the corner to a lovely empty field along with a bag of silk flower fairy clothing, some faux flowers and some handmade hair garlands. I took hundreds of photos and have begun to list the items into the Threads of a Fairytale Etsy shop. So far I have added a purple silk top and a matching fairy skirt, but still to come are a matching sunflower yellow set; a cream top; a rose pink skirt; a delicate turquoise green skirt; a bright pink skirt, and a matching set in ivory. We had lots of fun recreating the poses of the flower fairies by Cicely Mary Barker!

I prefer not to list everything at once so that throughout the pages of my shop, you get to see a variety of styles of fairytale clothing because most people will see the clothing in order of being posted. So I’ll also be adding other items that are waiting to be listed and I have a very special dress coming soon!

If you would like to see all the silk fairy clothing, please go straight to the ‘Fairytale and Cosplay‘ section of my shop. There are also four items there that I modelled in magical woodland in Cornwall last summer. They’re perfect for dressing up in if you’re looking for an adult fairy costume, but worn as separates the tops and skirts can be worn with jeans or t-shirts for a more casual bohemian style.

Almost all these tops and skirts were dyed by me using natural materials. If you’d like to see the process, I made a video of all my experiments with natural dyes on silk and cotton. As soon as the clothing is all listed on Etsy, I’ll be showing a video of me making them all on my YouTube channel, if you’d like to keep a look out for that too.

In the mean time, stay safe and well.
